Virat Kohli is a great batsman. His cover drives are as sumptuous as Tendulkar’s, his balance while playing a straight drive is superb and he is as fit as a horse. But of the many talents he possesses, leading a team is not one of them. He can chase any score on his day there is no doubt about that, but he has always been a player of individual magnificence. It is because of this reason that one is bent towards the idea of him not being able to achieve the greatness of a Dhoni or a Ganguly. So, we tell you some reason why Kohli will just be an average captain for the Indian cricket team.
1. Because His Cricket-Rage Is Not Aggression
Kohli has been at the center of numerous storms over the past two years. He is slowly becoming the controversy’s child and the recent flare-up between him and the umpires is a testament to that fact. He just cannot keep his head down but rather gets involved in serious breach of ICC code of ethics. This is not expected of a seasoned player let alone the Test captain of the Indian cricket team. Indian team’s great bowler Bishen Singh Bedi has flagged this issue many a times in the past but the BCCI does not pay heed to his suggestions. India might need a much disciplined coach who has a good temperament if Kohli continues as the Indian captain.
2. Kohli Regularly Turns To Feed His Ego Which Is Bigger Than The Game
Kohli’s ego is bigger than the game, plain and simple. Ego breeds silly mistakes and we have seen that many a times in the past. Take, for example, the World Cup semi-final innings in which Virat Kohli got out to a very stupid shot very early on in his innings. Now withstanding the result of the game, Kohli should have understood the sentiments of a billion people attached to this great game. But he did not. He proclaimed after the game that he was the best player in the squad and had scored the most runs during the past five years and that he did not deserve the brickbats for the loss. If that is not shameful boasting then we don’t know what is.
3. It’s Difficult To Respect A Captain Who Cannot Control His Emotions
Indian cricket players are the simplest of the lot. They live and die for their teammates, as is the case with MS Dhoni. He is well respected because he doesn’t show an iota of anger or frustration on the field. Now, that does not mean he is never angry, he is. But it’s just that we have never spotted him blowing off his top lid and go bonkers over a dropped catch. This is how well he has conducted himself on the field. And it’s unfortunate that we cannot say the same for Kohli. From flipping a bird towards mocking fans to hurling abuses at journalists and teammates, Kohli seems to be slipping out of character quite easily. And it’s not a good sign of things to come.
4. The Flow Of The Game Easily Affects His Temperament
Be it the rain-interruption in the game or the sledging by the bowlers, Virat Kohli can be snapped out of his good space in a matter of just few seconds. This in turn has an adverse impact on the morale of the whole team.
5. He Is Not As Instinctive As Dhoni Or As Aggressive as Ganguly
Since he is now the captain of the test squad, comparisons will be made as to how he leads the team beginning from the Bangladesh tour. One of the major problems with Kohli is that he is not as classy a captain as Ganguly who had an attitude of a bull or was as instinctive as Dhoni who was a master tactician. He possesses neither of the two extremes in abundance and that might be his undoing.
6. He Is Too Self-Obsessed To Lead A Team Full Of Stars
Indian team is full of stars including Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane. If Kohli wants to be successful, then he needs support and guidance of these senior players. However, in the past due to his combustible nature he has been involved in fights with Shikhar Dhawan over petty issues. Virat Kohli needs to understand that he can’t make decisions in silos in order to build a successful team.
7. Time And Again Kohli Shows That He Is Vulnerable To Pressure
Virat Kohli’s own performance suffers under the weight of captaincy. This is never the case with successful captains as a case study of great captains like Michael Clarke, MS Dhoni and Steve Waugh has taught us. Kohli is vulnerable in the face of expectations and it is one of his most easily detectable weaknesses.
8. Virat Doesn’t Know How To Maintain A Low Profile And Work In The Background
Virat Kohli is always in the news and most of the time for the wrong reasons. It is because of this constant fixation of media-eyeballs over him that even minor incidents are blown out of proportion. Virat needs to maintain some distance between his personal and professional life otherwise he is going to ruin both of them before he even gets started.
