Carter Family

The Carter family has made the heartfelt decision to disclose that former First Lady Rosalynn Carter has been diagnosed with dementia. Despite this, she continues to reside happily at home with her husband, cherishing the beauty of spring in Plains and enjoying cherished moments with loved ones.

Throughout her life, Mrs. Carter has been a prominent advocate for mental health, both during her time in the Georgia Governor’s Mansion, the White House, and through her work at The Carter Center. She has tirelessly championed improved access to care and the reduction of stigma surrounding mental health issues. It is essential to recognize that dementia, a condition impacting overall mental health, affects one in 10 older Americans. Just as Mrs. Carter did over half a century ago, we acknowledge that stigma often serves as a barrier preventing individuals and their families from seeking the necessary support they require. By sharing this news, we hope to foster vital conversations at kitchen tables and in doctor’s offices across the nation.

As the founder of the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers, Mrs. Carter frequently emphasized that there are four kinds of people in this world: those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who will require caregiving. The universal nature of caregiving is evident within our own family, and we are experiencing the joys and challenges of this journey firsthand. We kindly request understanding and respect for our family’s privacy and for all individuals across the country serving as caregivers. Further comments on this matter are not anticipated at this time.
